Massive 2-Kilogram Tumor Removed from Elderly Man’s Abdomen in Chennai

In a significant medical achievement, doctors at a government hospital in Chennai successfully removed a 2-kilogram tumor from the abdomen of a 68-year-old man. The patient had been experiencing persistent abdominal discomfort for several months, including pain, bloating, and a gradual swelling of his stomach, which he initially thought were age-related digestive issues.

As the symptoms worsened and his abdomen visibly enlarged, the patient sought medical help. Detailed scans and diagnostic tests revealed a large tumor located near his intestines, dangerously close to vital organs and blood vessels. The size and position of the tumor made the surgery particularly challenging, prompting the formation of a multidisciplinary team of specialists.

The surgical team performed a complex two-and-a-half-hour operation, during which the tumor—measuring approximately 30 centimeters in diameter—was carefully removed. Despite the tumor's proximity to critical internal structures, the procedure was completed without complications, thanks to precise planning and expert execution.

Following surgery, the patient was admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) for close monitoring. Remarkably, he showed signs of recovery within 24 hours, resumed a liquid diet, and began walking with assistance within a few days. Preliminary biopsy results suggest that the tumor is likely benign, although final confirmation is still awaited.

Dr. K. Ramesh, the lead surgeon, highlighted that such large tumors can grow silently over time without causing noticeable symptoms until they begin to interfere with bodily functions. He urged the public, especially elderly individuals, to take symptoms like persistent abdominal pain, bloating, or changes in bowel habits seriously and consult doctors without delay.

The patient expressed deep gratitude to the medical team for saving his life. Hospital officials praised the successful outcome as a testament to the skill and coordination of the surgical team. This case serves as a strong reminder of the importance of early diagnosis, regular health check-ups, and timely medical intervention to prevent serious health complications.
